California PC 1207.097 mandates that anyone convicted of a domestic violence offense to complete a court-approved program consisting of weekly 2 hour group sessions for a period of 52 weeks. John Hamel and his staff at John Hamel & Associates conduct such a program in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving convicted clients, as well as individuals referred through Child and Family Services, Family Court and those seeking help on a voluntary basis. This 8 hour seminar now makes the program available to certified batterer intervention providers, or facilitators-in-training who have previously completed the 40-hour core requirements of PC 1207.098. The 26-52 week program is suitable for adult men and women who have been convicted of a domestic violence offense, as well as for any individual who has been verbally and/or physically abusive towards his or her intimate partner. Psychoeducational, small group format encourages client participation, while providing practical strategies for overcoming aggression and improving relationship skills. Workbook includes progress logs and weekly exercises to facilitate learning. The program addresses intimate partner and family violence, and covers: the dynamics of partner abuse, power and control, socialization of violence, gender roles, the impact of domestic violence on children, anger management, coping with stress, communication and conflict resolution skills.

John Hamel, LCSW, has a Masters in Social Welfare from U.C.L.A., and has conducted batterer intervention and parent programs in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1992. He is the author of Gender-Inclusive Treatment of Intimate Partner Abuse (Springer, 2005), and co-editor with Tonia Nicholls, PhD, of Family Interventions in Domestic Violence: A Handbook of Gender-Inclusive Theory and Treatment (Springer, 2007). Mr. Hamel is Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed professional journal, Partner Abuse, published quarterly by Springer Publishing. He regularly speaks at conferences on domestic violence, and has provided consultation and training to mental health professionals, victim advocates and shelter workers, social service organizations, teachers, attorneys, judges and law enforcement officers. He also provides case consultation and expert witness testimony.
